Hull City Council has awarded Sirius Academy North a new bike library, a reward for their efforts towards their Modeshift STARS accreditations. The bikes were presented in partnership with R-Evolution, an organisation dedicated to supporting people back into work.

The bikes will be given to 30 children who will keep them on loan to use as they wish. Largely gifted by the public, R-Evolution’s mechanics have repaired the bikes for safe use by children as part of their organisations’ bike maintenance project. The project is aimed at children that do not have or have never owned a bike, to give them the opportunity to explore active travel in their own way.

Hannah Moore, Events & Communications Coordinator for R-Evolution, and two mechanics presented the bikes to the Lead for Pupil Experience, Andy Wilson. With Modeshift STARS funding confirmed for another year, this represents a new chapter in active travel for the school. For the children and school community involved, this is a step forward in leveling the playing ground in education and activity.

Access to bikes and bike maintenance is an important part of encouraging a culture of active travel in schools across Hull. Making bikes and bike training accessible can introduce a world of opportunities for better health and well-being for children and adults.
