The impact of exercise on children’s mental health

Sport England has published a new report highlighting the positive impact of sport and physical activity on children’s mental health conditions. The report, titled “Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Physical Activity”, was produced by Edge Hill University and released on World Mental Health Day.

The study reviewed 143 existing research papers and found strong, consistent evidence that sport and physical activity interventions had positive effects on diagnosed mental health problems in children and young people. This research is significant as it provides documented evidence of the role of physical activity in treating mental health conditions in young people, which was previously lacking.

Sport England will be using this research to create policies for children and young people. At First Step PE, with our experienced coaches and PE managers, we are ready to meet your targets for physical and mental health. Our PE Managers can work with your school to take the stress out of physical activity programmes, including enrichment, traditional sports and activities that support Maths and English skills.

Take your first step with First Step PE and create a physical activity programme that you can be proud of.
