Chris Boardman, the chairman of Sport England, has emphasised the need for a significant mindset shift within the sport and physical activity sector to effectively address climate change. Speaking at the global Sport Positive summit, he acknowledged the efforts of various sporting organisations that are leading in sustainability but stressed that more action is required.
Boardman described climate change as a ‘threat multiplier’ that exacerbates existing issues such as health crises and inequality. He urged the sector to harness its extensive influence, referring to sport as a potential ‘solution multiplier’ for societal challenges. He called for an equal focus on public engagement alongside internal operations to inspire change.
Climate change significantly impacts inequalities linked to mental and physical health. Encouraging active travel, such as cycling or walking, is one way organisations can promote healthier and more sustainable environments.
Additionally, Boardman highlighted Sport England’s commitment to sustainability through its strategy “Every Move”, which includes financial support for initiatives like restoring sports pitches and promoting outdoor activity.
