The Bikeability Trust has reached the finals of the Third Sector Awards for ‘Best Service Delivery Innovation’ with their Fleet Cycles project, which provided 1,124 bicycles to schools. This initiative addresses the significant barrier to cycle access, as research indicates that 37% of children do not own a bicycle and many others have bikes in poor condition.
To enhance participation in cycling training, the Trust utilised funding from the Department of Transport to purchase these bicycles, which were used over 16,000 times between April 2023 and May 2024. This has not only taught children essential cycling skills but also fostered a cycling culture within schools and communities.
At the award ceremony in London, representatives from the Trust expressed pride in their mission to ensure all children can access this vital life skill, emphasising their commitment to providing well-maintained bicycles through partnerships. The Trust aims to expand its support for more children with additional fleet cycles in the future.
