Maths on the Move (MOTM) presents a tried and proven way to improve maths skills for children of all ages. As part of our Pick & Mix Enrichment programme, we at First Steps PE are dedicated to meeting school targets for fitness, wellbeing, and numeracy skills.

In fact, along with much of the educational sector, Amanda Spielman, Ofsted Chief Inspector has led the call for schools to bring back as many opportunities for enrichment as possible. This comes as experts have found that children’s language, social skills, and physical fitness have been impacted by lockdowns, with numeracy taking the biggest hit.

In a simple 6-week trial, Leeds Beckett University researchers found that more than 90% of children demonstrated marked improvement in their maths performance. The programme’s patented degree of light to moderate activity is paired with core maths skills. It’s a programme that can be used to challenge the able and reorient the struggling.

Pupils are tasked with a concept, anything from multiplication to percentages, at the beginning of the class. They are then given a range of practical activities and games to help them practice the concept, with a test at the end. 80% of children reported an increase in confidence with their maths skills with teachers reporting improved concentration for the rest of the day.

Not only does it increase their time spent being active by around 5 minutes per day, but it’s great fun! Expending their natural energy, they learn maths with bean bags, hoops and much, much more. For children who’ve spent far longer than they should have been cooped up at home, MOTM is a welcome opportunity for them to learn and socialise with their peers.
