What motivates young people to get active?

A recent survey conducted by ukactive and Beano Brain reveals that many children aged 7-14 want to increase their physical activity levels despite a marked rise in screen time. The survey highlights that 40% of children wish to be more active, while only 26% prefer screen time over physical activities. Alarmingly, 53% of children report spending over three hours a day on screens outside of school, with 24% exceeding six hours.

The findings also indicate that social interaction is crucial in children’s preferences for physical activities. A majority, 63%, enjoy being active with friends or familiar people, and 49% prefer to wear their own clothes during activities. The survey suggests that children are more likely to engage in physical activities that are informal and supportive, with 30% expressing a preference for non-competitive options.
