In January, we launched First Step Wild – a brand new, innovative outdoor education and activity business designed to get children outside – building important knowledge and key skills through fun, active, hands on learning.
It’s proved really popular with schools and the initial feedback from the kids has been amazing. Since January, we’ve already rolled out the First Step Wild programme to 5 schools across the East Riding, helping to positively impact the lives of more than 500 children.
With new schools coming on board for next term, we’re already planning to roll out the primary school programme across Yorkshire and the Humber region over the coming year.
About First Step Wild
First Step Wild is a dedicated outdoor learning and activity business – offering a selection of primary school programmes and holiday camps for kids .
In addition to learning about wildlife, habitats and animal classification, the 6-week primary school programme helps children develop a range of key skills, including teamwork, leadership, communication, emotional intelligence, discipline and respect for others.
Working together as a team, children get hands on with a range of animals, learning about British wildlife and helping to create the right habitat for local animals. They earn to respect nature and get creative, gaining an understanding about outdoor survival, and building a shelter.
Throughout the programme, children are encouraged to connect their own emotions and feelings to the outdoors – building confidence and learning that the key to success is to believe.
Introducing Caine – First Step Wild Director
First Step Wild founder, Caine Wild, is a passionate outdoor enthusiast who is committed to helping children of all ages to reap the many benefits of active, hands on learning.
Having spent time at a pupil referral unit in his youth, he knows first-hand just how much difference outdoor learning can make in terms of child development, behaviour and achievement outcomes. Caine struggled in the classroom, but flourished outdoors, finding it the perfect environment to improve his confidence, enthusiasm and ability to master new concepts.
After leaving school, Caine studied Drama at Hull College, before heading into the Royal Navy. It was there, during basic training on Dartmoor, that he first had the idea of creating a dedicated, hands-on outdoor activity and learning programme for primary school children.
In 2016, Caine left the Navy to develop his concept, whilst working in children’s homes across Yorkshire. Running outdoor skills camps bushcraft and camping events, he helped to support the children, providing safe, nurturing outdoor activity programmes to develop self-confidence, improve wellbeing and learn essential life skills.
In 2018, Caine approached First Step with an outline plan for a new company, and First Step Wild was born.
